Fans of South African wines will know Rudiger Gretschel in his previous roles as cellar master at Boekenhoutskloof, Krone and Reyneke Wines. This is the first vintage from his new venture in Piekerneerskloof mountains, a combination of rough wilderness, magnified by its altitude and the proximity to the wild West Coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Pinotage vines for this wine were planted in 1990 in weathered Table mountain soils. During the growing season the vines are allowed to grow wild and with no manual intervention. The wine is fermented in oak barriques and racked after 15 months.
This a modern pinotage, elegant and balanced with lithe tannins. Fresh plum aromas and layers of fruit add complexity with added notes of spice and flashes of tar in the background.
