2019 Le Rocher des Violettes Cot (Malbec) Viellles Vignes
We are big fans of Le Rocher des Violettes and love their beautifully textured individual wines. So we were excited to try his old vine “Côt” (Malbec) which comes from a single parcel of 1 hectare on sandy clay soils. The vines are an average age of 80 years old with the oldest plantings dating back to 1891. 50% of the wine is made by whole cluster fermentation and is aged in large oak barrels for 14 months.
Owner Xavier Weisskopf founded Le Rocher in 2005. He acquired old vine parcels in Montlouis on the southern side of the Loire, most of which were planted pre-WWII, with some parcels reaching 120 years old! He is now certified organic and all grapes are picked by hand.
