On the West coast of South Africa and 3 hours drive from Cape town lies Donkiesbaai, an open white sand bay lapped by the icy waters of the Atlantic. It has been the holiday home of the Engelbrecht family for four generations. Named after this somewhat isolated spot ,Donkiesbaai is owned by Jean Englebrecht of Rust en Vrede fame.
The grapes for Donkiesbaai come from the unassuming region of Piekenierskloof, which lies about 80km inland from the coast. Unirrigated bush vines are planted in deep sandy soils. Elevated sites have a warm climate with cooling evening winds. Minimum intervention is practiced in both the vineyard and winery.
Expressive aromas of peach blossom and frangipan are followed by citrus and stone fruit notes. The palate is delicately textured and intriguingly complex with stone fruit flavours of peach, nectarine and, lime. Beeswax notes lend weight to the palate which finishes with a pleasant creaminess.
