Alice and Antoine Pouponneau are the proud caretakers of a 6.5-hectare vineyard, situated in the quaint village of Le Thoureil between Angers and Saumur. With a background in social work, Alice's familial connection to Burgundy led her back to her true passion for agriculture and wine-making in 2017. Antoine, on the other hand, honed his skills as a cellar master for La Tour du Bon in Bandol and as a consultant in Corsica, specializing in native yeast fermentation. With a focus on producing authentic and characterful wines, he has gained a prestigious list of clients, including esteemed names such as Chateau Latour and Cheval Blanc.
Together, they are fortunate to oversee vines that were planted 80-100 years ago, as well as more recent plantings from the 1980s, which include a variety of grapes such as Grolleau Noir, Grolleau Gris, Chenin,Cabernet Franc.
The VDF Blanc "Centenaire" is made from Chenin Blanc. The grapes are whole bunch pressed and undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 18 months in 228L barrels, with one-third being new oak.
