The Hilt, Santa Rita Hills
The Hilt was founded in 2008 in the Santa Rita Hills, Santa Barbara. The region of Santa Barbara is one of the coolest wine growing areas in the state of California. The Hilt’s best vineyards are on the windswept northern-facing sites, closest to the ocean. Three classic factors come into play; firstly the land here has poor soils that force vines to dig deep for water. Secondly, despite the warm daytime sun there are powerful winds and a cool maritime climate that is the key to allow grapes on the property to ripen slowly and retain freshness. Lastly, the vines on the property are low in vigour, allowing them to produce low yields of concentrated, complex grapes.
Radian’s vineyard's ridgelines reach 700 feet at its highest points. The rocky soils at the top of Radian offer good drainage and heat retention, an aspect critical to the production of ripe fruit at high altitude with cold, powerful winds. The Radian Pinot Noir is aged in 80% neutral French oak barrels, 20% stainless steel barrels for 12 months.
