On the West coast of South Africa and 3 hours drive from Cape town lies Donkiesbaai, an open white sand bay lapped by the icy waters of the Atlantic. It has been the holiday home of the Engelbrecht family for four generations. Named after this somewhat isolated spot Donkiesbaai, is owned by Jean Englebrecht of Rust en Vrede fame.
The grapes for Donkiesbaai wines come from the unassuming region of Piekenierskloof, which lies about 80km inland from the coast. Unirrigated bush vines are planted in deep sandy soils. Elevated sites have a warm climate with cooling evening winds. Minimum intervention is practiced in both the vineyard and winery.
