Bodegas Itsas Mendi is in the Basque country and is situated in an area where mountain slopes (Mendi) meet the Cantabrian Sea (Itsas).They are in Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and are dedicated to showing respect for the surrounding environment; all of their vineyards carry an Integrated Production Certification. Additionally, they have ECO certified vineyards and work with biodynamics in some sites.
Bat Berri is 100% Hondarrabi Zuri (Gros Corbu) from two plots (Gernika and Mungia), and unusually for a white wine it undergoes whole bunch carbonic maceration for 15 days and spontaneous fermentation in a stainless steel tank. It is then aged in large white clay jars before bottling.
This is complex and rich orange style wine. On the nose there are aromas of chamomile, hay and ripe stone fruits which follow through to the palate with additional notes of peach and balsam.
