Hot on the heals of our Klein Zalze offer last month, we have another cracking South African offer, this time from one of Elgin's finest producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Paul Cluver!

Paul Cluver Wines are a 4th generation family business that has been farming in the Elgin Valley for more than 120 years. They produce world class wines that really show off cool-climate Elgin terroir. The Cluver family was also at the forefront of the Elgin appellation and is also a leader in sustainable farming.

The Elgin Valley has perfect conditions for cooler climate grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The accumulation of the altitude and aspect with sea breezes lends itself to a longer ripening period on the vine. Cooler evenings slow things down and bring freshness and more restraint then other warmer areas of South Africa.

The wine business forms only a small part of their ‘De Rust Estate’. In addition to the vineyards and cellar, there are apple and pear orchards and even a Hereford stud. The estate forms part of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere, which was established in 1998, the first biosphere to be proclaimed in South Africa.

Their wines are a reflection of their environment and really are stunning!
You can place an order online or email andy@harrogatefinewinecompany.com or call the shop on 01423 522270.

2020 Paul Cluver Village Chardonnay £15.99. Offer price £12.80 per bottle
This is classy lightly oaked Chardonnay, only some of the wine spends 7 months in oak so as not to overrun the wine with too much oak. Nice apple and citrus character with hints of peach and apricot. Pound for pound this is a great little wine.

2019 Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir £15.99. Offer price £12.80 per bottle
Classic light and juicy Pinot Noir which sees 10 months in oak. Full of red fruits and cherries and a touch of savoury earthiness. Silky and with some soft edges. The oak is restrained and well balanced.

2018 Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay £20.99. Offer price £16.80 per bottle.
Chardonnay were the first vines to be planted on the estate back in 1987, these were also the first vines to be planted in Elgin as well. The wine spends nine months in French oak of which 33% is new. It is more concentrated than the Village but shows lovely balance, if you like new world Chardonnay then this is a must!

2020 Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir £20.99. Offer price £16.80 per bottle.
There are 22 hectares of Pinot Noir planted on the estate and only Burgundy clones are used. This shows more depth than the Village Pinot and is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. Lovely spice to this and the red fruits merge into some darker red fruits. Great stuff!

2020 Paul Cluver Seven Flags Chardonnay £55.99. Offer price £44.80 per bottle.
Paul Cluver's flagship Chardonnay is one of the very best and is highly rated in South Africa. Wild fermented and then aged for 9 months in French oak. This is the most elegant of their Chardonnay’s and has fantastic concentration and length. While Burgundy has its quantity issues wines as good as this are going to thrive. Drinking now but the quality means this would age well for 5 years plus.

2017 Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir £55.99. Offer price £44.80 per bottle.
This is made from the best selection of Pinot Noir barrels and produced in small quantities. It spends 12 months in French oak 14% of which is new. This has layers of red and dark fruits with plenty of spice and pepper. It also has some savoury notes and classic forest floor coming from a few years bottle age. Considered to be one of the most Burgundian of all of South African Pinot Noirs. It certainly delivers some sensational drinking! Accessible now but will age well for 5 years easily.

2020 Paul Cluver Noble Late Harvest Riesling 375ml.£22.99. Offer Price £18.39 per half bottle
Interestingly Paul Cluver are the biggest single Riesling grower in South Africa and a lot of it goes into this. The grapes are left to become affected with botrytis and are then hand sorted back at the winery. This is a text book luscious sweet wine but with great acidity to balance the sweetness. This is an absolute steal!
